The Beginning
In 1970, after spending a couple of decades in Mombasa, Dr. Antonio Sequeira returned to Goa with a vision and a deep-rooted connection to his homeland.
He established Tonia Industries in 1971, starting with the production of traditional cashew and coconut fenny. One of the early creations — Tonia Pick Coffee — became a cult favourite, remembered fondly to this day.
By 1985, under the leadership of Dr. Antonio’s eldest son Aleixo, the group expanded into the manufacturing of quality Indian whisky, brandy, rum, and gin. Soon after, Tonia ventured into wines and liqueurs, with the San Andre range becoming a well-known name in the market.
Today, the wine and spirits division comprises Tonia Liquor Industries, Springfields (India) Distilleries, and Tonia Winery & Vineyards Pvt. Ltd — all focused on production — while Tonia Sales Agency leads the group’s trading operations, including the import of select wines, spirits, and beers.
Aleixo’s brother Norman Sequeira played a pivotal role in shaping early sales and marketing, helping establish the brand’s flagship labels.
The youngest Sequeira sibling, Mario, attributes much of the brand’s winemaking success to Fernando Abreu, Tonia’s trusted house winemaker. Trained in France and Italy, Fernando brought European discipline and refinement to the distillery — and over the years, became an integral part of the Tonia identity.
From one generation to the next, Tonia remains a family story — steeped in heritage, shaped by craft, and defined by a quiet pursuit of excellence.

A standard passed down. A standard held up.
A New Chapter in Indian Spirits
In 2025, Mazal became the first ever Indian rum to win Gold at the European Spirits Challenge in London.
It wasn’t just a win. It was a statement.
Of what’s possible when legacy meets ambition.
Of what Indian spirits can become when made without compromise.
